1 a) The calculated mass percent of water if its not removed properly then the weight of the denominator increases in the following fomula. Therefore, % by mass would be reduced

=[ Mass of water (Mass of hydrated salt-Mass of anhydrous salt) / Mass of hydrated salt]*100
b) If some of the sample spattered out from the crucible. The weight of denominator in the formula given above will be reduced, hence % by mass will be increased.
