Question

the boiling point of PCE, TCE and DCE are known to be 121 87 and 60 degrees, given this information can you suggest the approximate temperature range for injection port, column and detector? Can you predict the elution sequence of the three compounds? the boiling point of PCE, TCE and DCE are known to be 121 87 and 60 degrees, given this information can you suggest the approximate temperature range for injection port, column and detector? Can you predict the elution sequence of the three compounds?

Explanation / Answer

With the given information the system setup would be,

Injection port : 250 oC

Column = 200 oC

Detector = 150 oC

the injection port ensures all of the compounds are vaporised. Column should maintain a temperature so the compounds do not deposit on it. Detector temperature should be such that the compounds spends much time (higher residence time) in it for maximum intensity.

The elution order of the three compounds would be, first DCE > TCE > PCE (last) to elute off the column.
