Question
Chem 112 1. You know that the weak acids exists in aqueous solutions in equilibrium with their dissociated ions. Write the equilibrium expression as a function of the K of a weak acid. 2. If 1 /2 of the weak acid were neutralized into salt, how would the concentration of the weak acid compare to the concentration of the salt? This is called the 1/2 neutralization point.) 3. If a sample is at the 1/2 neutralization point. what species are equivalent and can be cancelled from the Ka equation? Ka =Explanation / Answer
1. Weak acid dissociates as,
HA <==> H+ + A-
So the equilibrium expression becomes,
Ka = [H+][A-]/[HA]
2. At half neutralization point,
concentration of acid = concentration of salt in solution
3. If the solution is at half neutralization point we can cancel the [A-] and [HA] from top and bottom
So we get,
Ka = [H+]
