Question

Explain each of the following by discussing the principles of chemical bonding and/or atomic structure. Your answer must include a discussion of BOTH chemicals mentioned in the question. a.) Ca2+ and Cl- ions have different radii, but they are isoelectric. Which ion has the larger radius? Explain. c.) There are no compounds that contain He, but compounds containing Kr have been synthesized. Explain why. d.) The first ionization energy of B is 800 kJ mol-1, but the first ionization energy of Be is 900 kJ mol-1. Explain.

Explanation / Answer

Among Ca+2 is in small size and Cl- ion has large size. Cation has always small size and Anion has always large size. because due to morer number of protons is more compare to electrons in cation so valence electrons are strongly attracted towards nucleaus hence size of the cation is small , similarly anion has extra electron beyond the nucleaus charge hence it has large size compare to netal atom.

He - 1s2 and Kr - 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 4d0 4f0

since Kr consisits of empty orbital in its valence shell so it can involve exitation of electrons or accepting electron from other atoms so it can exihibit compounds but this is not possible for He hence compounds of He are not possible.

B - 1s2 2s2 2p1

Be - 1s2 2s2

Be have fullyfilled sub shell configuration so the first ionization energy of Be is high compare to B.
