Question
The drug Nipride, Na2[Fe(CN)5NO], is an inorganic complex which is used as a source of NO to lower blood pressure during surgery.
a) Provide a systematic name for the complex Na2[Fe(CN)5NO]. Note: The NO ligand in this complex is neutral and it is named 'nitrosyl'
b) The [Fe(CN)5NO]-2 complex is red-violet in color, while the similar complex [Fe(CN)6]-3 is red-orange in color. The CH- ligand is a strong field ligand. By comparison, the NO ligand is
i) much weaker
ii) slightly weaker
iii) slightly stronger
iv) much stronger
Explain your choice using the language of crystal field theory.
Explanation / Answer
a) we name cationic first and then anionic part of complex.
complex has Fe in 3+ state.
Sodium penta cyano nitrosyl ferrate (III)
b) red-violet color is magneta colour its complimentary colour absorbed = yellowgreen
red organe colour complimentary colour is bluegreen
colour shown is complimentary to colour absorbed.
Hence complex with NO absorbed yellowgreen light and complex with only CN ligands absorbed bluegreen.
The energy of bluegreem is higher than yellogreen. Hence higher energy absorbed by complex with all CN ligands.
Hence CN has spliited more compared to No.
Hence NO ligand is slightly weaker
