for Carbon MW is 12 g/mol
for oxygen MW is 16g/mol
carbon = 27.3/12 = 2.275 mole
oxygen = 72.7/16 = 4.54 mole
Divide the mole number by the smallest if any of the numbers are fractions and then try to find whole numbers for all.
carbon = 2.275/2.275 = 1
oxygen = 4.54/2.275 = 2
So the empirical formula is CO2
