Question
The preparations of two aqueous solutions are described in the table below. For each solution, write the chemical formulas of the major species present at equilibrium. You can leave out water itself. Write the chemical formulas of the species that will act as acids in the 'acids' row, the formulas of the species that will act as bases in the 'bases' row, and the formulas of the species that will act as neither acids nor bases in the 'other' row. You will find it useful to keep in mind that HCH_3 CO_2 is a weak acid.Explanation / Answer
1) KOH + CH3COOH -------- CH3COOK + H2O
Major Species: CH3COOH, CH3COO-, K+
Acid: CH3COOH
Base : KOH
Base : CH3COO- (it will be basic since it is a conjugate base of a weak acid)
2) Major Species: CH3COOH
Buffer solution is made of : CH3COOH AND CH3COO-Na+
HBr is a strong acid which will dissciate fully as H+ and Br-
i.e HBr ---------- H+ + Br-
Adding HBr to the above buffer will form more of CH3COOH as the H+ will react with the conjugate base (CH3COO-) of the buffer.
Acid: CH3COOH, HBr
Base: CH3COONa
