Question
What laboratory experiments can be perfomed to identify key characteristics (and actually identify) unknown metal salts?
I plan on:
1) dissolving the unkowns in distilled water and using indicator solution to determine if acidic or basic solution occurs
2) obtaining density of unknown samples by weighing them and obtaining displacemnt when placed in graduated cylynder.
I am also given a pH meter, a strong acid and strong base for titration, and acetone, but how could that be used to help determine the identity or characteristics of the metal salts? Thank you!
Note: I am also provided with a spectrometer
Explanation / Answer
For identification of metal salt in given sample. You should have to go through plan 2 because for complete identification you have to known about the acidic and basic radicals of salt sample. For that you have weighing the sample to make aqueous solution then using ph meter find the acidity and basicity of sample, then solution be titrating with strong acid and acetone because a small amount of acid and acetone forming eluent with sample in resins of atom absorption spectroscopy method.
Atom absorption spectroscopy method leads to find the concentration of analytes in given sample. This process will hopefully leads to identification of your salt.
