Question

The following questions are from today's experiment EQUL 397; Acids, and Bases. Use the table to answer your questions. Is a 0.1 M solution of Ca(CH)_2 is acidic or basic? What experimental evidence supports your conclusion? List the solution that is acidic among the above two. What experimental evidence supports your answer? The identification label is fall off test tubes, each containing a calories solution. A student knew that one of them is 0.12 M HCl, another is 0.1 M NaOH and the third is phenolphthalein solution. They are labeled as A, B, and C. The student performed the following tests and observations are listed in the table. Determine which label should be attached to each test tube.

Explanation / Answer

Answer:-

1. 0.1M solution of Ca(OH)2 is basic because thymolphthalein given blue colour in 0.1M solution of Ca(OH)2.

2. NaNO2 solution is acidic among the given two solutions.

3. Thymolphthalein doesnot give any colour in the 0.1M NaNO2 solution.

4. The label "A" should be attached to 0.1 M NaOH solution containing test tube because it turns the solution to red colour.

The label"B" should be attached to phelolphthalein containing test tube because it changes colour when added to the  0.1 M NaOH solution.

The label "C" should be attached to 0.1 M HCl containing test tube because when the one drop of this solution is added to the solution of  0.1 M NaOH solution and phenolphthalein , it turns the solution colourless.
