Question

When 0.514 g of biphenyl (C_12H_10) undergoes combustion in a bomb calorimeter, the temperature rises 25.0 degree to 29.4 degree C. Find Delta E_rxn for the combustion of biphenyl in kJ/mol biphenyl. The heat capacity of the bomb calorimeter, determined in a separate experiment, is 5.86 kJ/degree C Why do you feel so hoi on a summer day in Northridge? Why do you feel so cold in the winter in New York? If you had four materials, block of wood, piece of wool, piece of glass, piece of metal, and leaves them overnight in a room with a thermometer on it, which would be the coldest and hottest the next morning? Why do you sweat? Why does a steam bum hurt so badly?

Explanation / Answer

7. In Northridge its hot in summer because of high percentage of humidity. The water molecules in the atmosphere vibrates in high frequency and causes increase in the temperature. This happens because of high humidity which is due to geographical position of Northridge I.e near the sea.

10. The reason that we sweat is the humidity gets to us and we get hot. When the human body gets hot it has cool the body off by loosing temperature. This cooling off is done by sweating. The sweat evaporates into air and this needs energy input. The energy is supplied by the body with the rise in temperature.

8. Its cold in winter in New York . New York generally is a warmer place but in the winter when the cold breeze from west starts the warmer air or the humidity goes up into the atmosphere because of its higher buoyancy than the cold breeze and making room for the cold in the lower part of atmosphere. This happens not only from the west but from around the new York making it colder.

9. Block of wood will become coldest and piece of metal will be hottest among the four. This because of their conductivities. Wood is non conductor of heat, so doesn't absorb any heat and becomes cool where as metal is a very good conductor of heat and absorbs heat from the surroundings .

11. When water goes from gas to liquid it is undergoing phase change. Phase change requires a lot more energy Tha temperature change. The energy required for water to go from a liquid to a gas is called heat of vaporization. When steam hits the skin a lot of energy will be released as it condenses into a liquid, undergoing a phase change. This energy release causes a much worse burn than if the same amount if boiling water hits your skin.
