Stimulus discrimination Explain the rationale why for each term in your example

Explanation / Answer

1. CLASSICAL CONDITIONING: The process of learning a new behavior through the process of association. In other words when two stimuli are linked together to produce a response. Where as in conditioning the stimuli and responses become associated with each other. The best example for this conditioning is the association of smile(stimuli) with a friendly behavior(response).

A. UCS(UNCONDITIONED STIMULUS): A stimulus that unconditionally triggers a response automatically. Unconditional stimulus results in an unconditional response(UCR)

Example: Presenting the food on table naturally and automatically triggers in salivation. That unconditional response which occurs automatically or naturally is the best example of unconditioned stimulus.

B. UCR(UNCONDITIONED RESPONSE): An unconditioned response is the sudden response that occurs naturally in reaction to an unconditioned stimulus.

Example: Jerking of hand after suddenly touching a hot pan, jumping back from a growling dog. That unlearned reaction is great examples of unconditioned response.

C. CS(CONDITIONED STIMULUS): In classical conditioning the response to a previous neutral stimulus after becoming associated with unconditioned stimulus comes to a trigger conditioned response.

Example: Stomach infection(UCS)and virus might be associated with eating a specific spicy food(CS)

D. CR(CONDITIONED RESPONSE): It is the learned response to the previously neutral stimulus. In simple words the conditioned stimulus(CS) has been associated with unconditioned stimulus (UCS) to create a new condition response(CR)

Example: Spicy food(CS) which was eaten by a person who was sick with stomach infection (UCS) now produce a response of nausea(CR)

E. EXTINCTION: In psychology extinction refers to gradual weakening of a conditioned response (CR) that results in behavior disappearing than before.

Example: Imagine if you get hair fall after using particular conditioner then you will slowly decreasing the usage and shift to new conditioner.

F. SPONTANEOUS RECOVERY: It is a sudden response which has been previously conditioned. If the conditioned stimulus (CS) and unconditioned stimulus (UCS) are no longer associated, then spontaneous recovery occurs resulting in extinction.

Example: Consider a person who is not afraid of animals but after hearing a loud noise of the animals, he is very much afraid.

G. STIMULUS GENERALIZATION: In the classical conditioning, stimulus generalization is the tendency for conditioned stimulus (CS) to recall similar responses after that particular response has been conditioned.

Example: Training a dog using the word jump will make the dog to follow instructions and jump whenever the dog hears similar response or command.

H. STIMULUS DISCRIMINATION: It is the ability to differentiate a conditioned stimulus (CS) and other stimuli, which are not paired with unconditioned stimulus(UCS)

Example: Consider a particular horn sound of a car(CS) then the discrimination would be able to tell the difference between the particular car horn sound you considered and the similar horn sounds of other cars.
