Question

Hello Experts, I need help with answer to this question. Textbook Franz Eisenfuhr et al, Chapter 3

Comparative prices are sometimes used as attributes for the cost of products so that they are easier to compare. E.g. a 400 gram package of butter might cost 30 crowns and a 500 gram packet 32 crowns, a com- parative price for butter could be crowns per kilogram, which in this case would be 30=0:4 = 75 and 32=0:5 = 64 crowns, respectively. For some items cost per weight would no be a very relevant attribute, think e.g. of shoes. And a heavier frying pan is not necessarily better than a an that weighs less. In the picture below we see a frying pan being sold with comparative price as cost per meter in diameter. Stekpanna means frying pan, ICA is the manufacturer, 28cm is the diameter and Jfr pris 710:71/m means that the comparative price is 710:71 crowns per meter.

* Discuss whether diameter is a well chosen attribute for a comparative price for frying pans and what would be a reasonable alternative. (1 page.)

Thanks in advance

Explanation / Answer

yes, cost per metre could be a well chosen attribute as it follows almost every property of an attribute. for an instance we know that attributes should have some desireable properties as mentioned in the text book you reffered in your question. firstly it should be direct and as it seems that frying pan is a circular shaped object with varying size in terms of the circular base of tha pan. bigger andsmaller pans can be easily measured in terms of diameter of the pan. there is no indirect term used to define the size of the pan and hence it qualify its first property of bieing direct. secondly it is also operational as the measurements and calculation of diameter are reliable and easy to fo in minimum efforts. furthermore it is also understandable unit of size and also comprehensive and ambiguous. but considering only the diameter is not the best option to chose attribute for a frying pan as the metal used and the thickness and the weight of the metal also plays an improtant role. but in terms of comparision between same metal and thickness diameter is well chosen attribute and we can chose cost of a frying pan in terms of cosr per diameter. the reasonable alternative for the comarision of cost could be the quality of metal used in same sized frypans as it shows some qualities like induction friendly and oven safe, non sticky and easy grip.
