Question

Hello Chegg study Team, Hello Chegg study Team, Please help me with this hw problem ASAP. Operational Definitions Exercise Provide the same information for each set of variables below: A. Which method would you use to test the hypothesis (experimental or non-experimental)? Why? a. If experimental, which is the IV and which is the DV Suggest an operational definition for each variable. B. If experimental, describe how the IV would be manipulated and how the DV would be measured. If correlational, how would you measure the variables (be specific) a. 4. Political orientation and attitudes toward gun control

Explanation / Answer

A. The experimental method is more suitable for testing the validity of a Hypothesis as it provides for an objective and systematic study of the significant relationship between the variables under controlled conditions and thus helps to ensure that the change in the dependent variable is due to the independent variable alone and not due to chance factors. In an experiment, the independent variable is the variable which is manipulated by the experimenter to study its effect on the participants. The dependent variable is the effect on behaviour, change in performance, ability etc. which is being studied by the researchers. For instance, in an experiment on memory and noise, the researchers may manipulate the presence or absence of noise in a test room and use it as an independent variable to study whether the presence of noise affects the dependent variable, which is operationally defined as the participants’s learning and recall of a list of words.
