Question
1. Living on a Flat Earth
As it turns out, the Flat Earth Society was right all along - you are living on a flat earth, and make paper maps for a living. In this world, instead of using latitude and longitude, they use Cartesian coordinate systems, but every country defines their own origin (0,0) point at their capital. Each country also uses their own national units for length, and they all orient their coordinate system to align with the peculiar shape of their country. The United Nations has also defined a global coordinate system. There is no concept of north, south, east, or west, however, everyone understands, in general, what a Cartesian coordinate system is. Which elements of map construction would still be important to use in this flat earth society? (select all that would still apply)
a. map scale
b. map north arrow
c. map projection
d. map datum
e. map date
f. map x and/or y arrows
g. map symbology
h. map reference grid ticks and labels
Explanation / Answer
If we start living on a Flat Earth and use Cartesian coordinate systems instead of using latitude and longitude then still we will be using map scale to tell us the size of each grid which is used to calculate the distance, map datum as we need the reference point from where this Cartesian coordinate system is starting, map x and/or y arrows so that we'll be knowing which side is up and down and which is left and right, map symbology to know about the legends and symbols and map reference grid ticks and labels to use it for linking with other map of different part of the country or continent.
