Question

In the figure, a particle moves along a circle in a region of uniform magnetic field of magnitude B = 3.1 mT. The particle is either a proton or an electron (you must decide which). It experiences a magnetic force of magnitude 3.1 x 10-15 N. What are (a) the particle's speed, (b) the radius of the circle, and (c) the period of the motion?

Explanation / Answer

a)

Magnetic force is given as

Fm = Bvq

3.1 *10^-15 = 0.031 * e * v

v = 6.24 *10^5 m/s

the speed of particle is 6.24 *10^5 m/s

b)

the particle is electon

as F = mv^2/r

r = m*(6.24 *10^5)^2/3.1 *10^-15

r = 1.145 *10^-4 m

the radius of particle is 1.145 *10^-4 m

c)

T = 2*pi*r/v

T = 2*pi*1.145 *10^-4/6.24 *10^5

T = 1.152 *10^-9 s

the period of the motion is 1.152 *10^-9 s
