Question

8. For the situation shown below, what are the directions of the magnetic force on each side of the loop. As seen from above, what direction will the loop rotate, or will there be no rotation. 9. How could you orient a current carrying conductor in a magnetic field so that it experiences no force, or is it not possible? 10. Below is a field directed to the right as indicated but the type of field is unknown (either an electric field or a magnetic field). If you were given a positive charge, how could you use it to determine what type of field it is? Explain your answer as completely as you can.

Explanation / Answer

8.

on side bc force = zero

on ab = into the page

on cd = out of the page

on ad = zero

hence,
loop will rotate clockwise with ab going into the page

9.

as F = IlB sin (theta)

so,

we will orient wire either parallel or antiparllel to the magnetic field

10.

I will place a positive charge in field with zero velocity.

if the charge moves , it is electric field

and if the the charge stays at its position , then it is magnetic field as magnetic force

is zero at stationary charge
