Explanation / Answer

The problem is similar to the projectile motion in gravitational filed. The initial speed 1e6 m/s is parallel to the plates and in no way it is altered. If the distance of the plates is d, then the the electron has to move a distance of d/2 to hit the plate before it leaves the length of the plate. The time can be calculated using time = length of the plate / speed parallel to the plates ( 1e^6) The acceleration toward the plate (perpendicular to the speed 1E6, a = F/m = e E/m where E is the electric field between the plates. The time to move the distance (d/2) = 0.5 a t^2 where a = e E/m, and time t = length of the plate / speed parallel to the plates ( 1e^6) For proton you replace m by the mass of proton. ==================================== There are two plates. One in the upper and the other in the lower. The pdroton enters into the field along the center line ,but as soon as it enteres the negaitve plate wiil attract the proton and hence its path will be a curved one inside the plate, If the curve is too deep the proton will hit the upper plate, If its not so deep it will not hit the plate Since it enters the plates along the center line , the vertical displacemet is the vertical displacemet between the plate and the center line.
