Question
A 6.0 kg object moving in the +x direction at 5.5 m/s collides head-on with a 2.8 kg object moving in the -x direction at 4.0 m/s. Find the final velocity of each mass for each of the following situations. (Take the positive direction to be +x.)
(a) The bodies stick together.
_____ m/s (6.0 kg mass) ----> I solved this correctly to get 2.4773
_____ m/s (2.8 kg mass) -----> This is also 2.4773
(b) The collision is elastic.
_____ m/s (6.0 kg mass)
_____ m/s (2.8 kg mass)
(c) The 6.0 kg body is at rest after the collision.
_____ m/s (6.0 kg mass)
_____ m/s (2.8 kg mass)
(d) The 2.8 kg body is at rest after the collision.
_____ m/s (6.0 kg mass)
_____ m/s (2.8 kg mass)
(e) The 6.0 kg body has a velocity of 4.0 m/s in the -x direction after the collision.
_____ m/s (6.0 kg mass)
_____ m/s (2.8 kg mass)
Are the results in (c), (d), and (e) "reasonable"? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
nd the third case given isnot possible as the velocity of the 6kg object after the collision dosent become zero
this can be seen using conservation of momentum
as the 2.8kg body is movin in the opposite direction but its momenum is less compared to that of the 6kg body
so the total momentum of the 6kg body dosent get nullified . vel of 6kg body dosent become zero
so case c is no valied
similarly the 2.8 kg body will also not be at rest
case d is also not valied
and in case (E) the 6kg body moves to -x direction after collision
it will not happen as the total momentum of the 6kg body is not nullified by the 2.8 kg body
so case (e) is also not valied
