A railroad car of mass 2.56 x 104 kg is moving with a speed of 3.84 m/s. It collides and couples with three other coupled railroad cars, each of the same mass as the single car and moving in the same direction with an initial speed of 1.92 m/s. (a) What is the speed of the four cars after the collision? 2.40 (b) How much mechanical energy is lost in the collision? I got part (a) but I`m stuck in part (b), please help.. J

Explanation / Answer

Initial KE = 0.5 mv^2

KEi = 0.5* 2.56 e 4 * 3.84 *3.84

KEi = 1.887 e 5 J

KE f = 0.5 * 4* 2.56 e 4 * 2.4 *2.4

KEf = 2.949 e 5 Joules

so

Mech energy lost U = 2.929 -1.887

U = 1.042 *10^5 Joules
