Question

A term of eight dogs pulls a sled with waxed wood runners on wet show (mush!) The dogs have average masses of 19.5 kg , and the loaded sled with its has a mass of 216 kg. The coefficient of static and kinetuc friction is mu s = 0.14 and mu2 = 0.10. Calculate the acceleration starting from rest if each dog an average force 195 N backward on the snow in m/s2. What is the acceleration once the seld starts to move in m/s2? Using part calculate the force in the coupling between the dogs the sled in Newtons.

Explanation / Answer

a)

Fapplied = no of dogs* Force by each dong =8*195= 1560N

Fnet = Fapplied – Fstatic friction

Ffrction= s*mg = 0.14*216*9.8= 296.352N

Fnet = 1560-296.352 = 1263.648N

mtotal msled+mdogs = 216+8*19.5 = 372kg

a= Fnet/mtotal = 1263.648/372 = 3.397 m/s^2

b)

Fapplied = no of dogs* Force by each dong =8*195= 1560N

Fnet = Fapplied – Fstatic friction

Ffrction= k*mg = 0.10*(216+372)*9.8= 211.68N

Fnet = 1560-211.68= 1263.648N

mtotal msled+mdogs = 216+8*19.5 = 372kg

a= Fnet/mtotal = 1348.32/372 = 3.6245 = 3.62m/s^2
