Question

A baseball is thrown horizontally out of the third floor window of a hotel room and the ball lands in the pool 80m from the window. If the height of the window is 17m above the surface of the pool, what was the speed of the baseball when it left the thrower's hand?
Please show all steps in solving. Thank you.

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

height of windows , h = 17 m

distance , d = 80 m

let the time of flight is tf

tf = sqrt(2 * h/g)

tf = sqrt(2 * 17/9.8)

tf = 1.863 s

Now , hoziontal velocity = distance/time

hoziontal velocity = 80/1.863

hoziontal velocity = 43 m/s

the hoziontal velocity out of the window is 43 m/s
