Question

A stationary particle of charge q = 2.5 x 10-8 C is placed in a laser beam whose intensity is 2.4 x 103 W/m2. Determine the maximum magnitude of the (a) electric and (b) magnetic fields exerted on the charge, and also the (c) magnitude of the magnetic force exerted on the charge. If the charge is moving at a speed of 3.7 x 104 m/s along the electromagnetic wave, find the maximum magnitude of (d) the magnetic force exterted on the particle.

Explanation / Answer

a)
We know, Intensity of light wave,
I = E^2/(2*mue*C)

==> E = sqrt(I*2*mue*c)

= sqrt(2.4*10^4*2*4*pi*10^-7*3*10^8)

= 4254 N/c

b) B = E/c

= 4254/(3*10^8)

= 1.418*10^-5 T

C) Electric force = q*E

= 2.5*10^-8*4254

= 1.06*10^-4 N

D) magnetic force on mving charged particle,

F = q*v*B*sin(theta)

= 2.5*10^-8*3.7*10^4*1.418*10^-5*sin(90)

= 1.31*10^-8 N
