Two carts of equal mass, A and B, approach each other with velocities of equal magnitude but opposite directions. The colliding surfaces of the carts are coated with an adhesive so the carts stick together after the collision. Upon collision, (Points 1) the carts stop dead the carts move the direction cart A was traveling before the collision. the carts move the direction cart B was traveling before the collision. sometimes the carts move the direction cart A was traveling before the collision and sometimes the carts move the direction cart B was traveling before the collision

Explanation / Answer

1)

let the final speed is v

using conservation of momentum

(m + m) *v = m * u - m * u

v = 0

hence , the carts stop dead

2)

for the third law of special case ,

as the forces are same in magnitude and act for same time

>> conservation of momentum

3)

according to second law of motion

force = Change in momentum/time

change in momentum = force * time

change in momentum = Impulse

Impulse and change in momentum is equal

4)

as momentum = mass * velocity

hence , for same mass of car

momentum is higher for higher speed

the car moving at 60 miles per hour
