Question
I need help with part B. For part A I got 18 Amps. For part b I calculated the field from the top wire with 18 Amps is downwards and got 7.2e-5. And the field from the bottom wire is upwards and 2.4e-5. Do you add the two or subtract? Since the top wire has a larger field then the direction would be downwards? . Two long, straight wires carry currents in opposite directions as shown in the figure below. Two long, straight wires carry currents in opposite directions as shown in the figure below. The bottom wire carries a current of 6 A. Point A is at the midpoint between the wires and point B is a distance d/2 below the 6 A wire. It is found that the total magnetic field at B is zero. a. Determine the value of the current, I, in the top wire. b. Determine the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field at point A if d= 10 cm. 6 A BExplanation / Answer
b) Field due to top wire at point A = B1 = uo*I1/(2pi*r) = (4pi*10^-7*18)/(2pi*0.05) = 7.2*10^-5 T (outward)
and Field due to bottom wire at point A = B2 = uo*I2/(2pi*r) = (4pi*10^-7*6)/(2pi*0.05) = 2.4*10^-5 T (outward)
total magnetic field at point A = B = B1 + B2 = 9.6*10^-5 T (outward)
