Question

A 2.70 kg block on a horizontal floor is attached to a horizontal spring that is initially compressed 0.0360 m . The spring has force constant 825 N/m . The coefficient of kinetic friction between the floor and the block is 0.44 . The block and spring are released from rest and the block slides along the floor.

What is the speed of the block when it has moved a distance of 0.0150 m from its initial position? (At this point the spring is compressed 0.0210 m .) Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

work done by gravity = 0

work done by spring = 1/2k(x2^2-x1^2) = 1/2*825(0.036^2-0.015^2) = 0.44J

work done by friction = -*f*s = -0.44*2.7*9.8*0.036 = --.419 J

1/2mv^2 = ws+wf

v^2 = 2/m(0.44-0.419) = 0.0155

v = 0.125 m/sec
