ID: 1448038 • Letter: C

Question

Calculate the total torque (magnitude and direction) for each of the following cases shown below. You can assume the "bar" the masses are attached to is massless. The top point of the triangle represents the pivot point for the system. Be sure to include the magnitude and the direction.

(a) Here m = 5 g and d = 18 cm.

(b) Here m = 5 g and d = 18 cm.

(c) Here m1 = m2 = 5 g and d1 = d2 = 18 cm.

(d) Here m1 = m2 = 5 g and d1 = 18 cm and d2 = 1.5 m.

magnitude     direction     ---Select--- no direction clockwise counter-clockwise

Explanation / Answer

a) Torque about pivot, T = d*m*g*sin(90)

= 0.18*5*10^-3*9.8

= 8.82*10^-3 N.m

direction : clockwise

b)

Torque about pivot, T = d*m*g*sin(90)

= 0.18*5*10^-3*9.8

= 8.82*10^-3 N.m

direction : counter-clockwise

c) net torque about pivot, T = m2*g*d - m1*g*d

= 0 (since m1 = m2 and d is same for both objects)

d) T = m2*g*d2 - m1*g*d1

= 5*10^-3*9.8*1.5 - 5*10^-3*9.8*0.18

= 0.0647 N.m

direction : counter-clockwise
