Question
Calculate the thermal speeds of hydrogen and deuterium atoms at the exospheric temperature of 350 K. The mass of a hydrogen atom is 1.67×10?27 kilograms and the mass of a deuterium atom is about twice the mass of a hydrogen atom. Remember that this problem requires you to answer two questions (Items). The Thermall Velocity of Hydrogen and the Thermal Velocity of Deuterium. Refer to Mathematical Insight Section 10.2. Note that your calculation will produce an answer in meters per second and that this problem asks you for an answer in kiilometrs per second.

Explanation / Answer
hydrogen:Vthermal=root(2K*T/M)
=root[2(1.38*10^-23j/k)*(350k)/1.67*10^-27kg
=2,410m/s
=2.41km.
deuterium:Vthermal=root(2k*T/M)=root[2(1.38*10^-23j/k)(350)/(2*(1.67*10^-27kg)]
=1,700m/s
=1.70km/s.
