Question
Calculate the theoretical yields of the compounds to be prepared in this experiment. Starting materials are: 5.00 g CuSO4 x 5H20 and 1.00 g CoCl2. The metal in both cases is the limiting reagent. Hint: Find the number of moles of Cu(II) in the sample of CuSO4 x 5H20 that you used. That will equal the number of moles of [Cu(NH3)4] SO4 x H20 that could theoretically be prepared. Process in a similar way for the synthesis involving Co (ll). How would you formally name the compound [Cu(NH3)4] SO4 x H2O? Give the formula of Diaquodichloroplatinum(ll). (Is it [PtCl2(H20)2] ?)
Explanation / Answer
1)mass of CuSO4.xH2O=5.00g
Moles of CuSO4.xH2O=mass /molar mass=5.00g/249.685 g mol^-1=0.02 moles
As 1 mole CuSO4.xH2O produces 1 mole of [Cu(NH3)4] SO4 xH2O. So 0.02 moles of CuSO4 x 5H20 would produce same amount of product,as the former is limiting.
Also,amount of Cu(II) in 1 mole of CuSO4 x 5H20=1 mole
So amount of Cu(ii) in 0.02 mol of CuSO4 x 5H20(used up)=0.02 moles
2) with CoCl2
Moles of CoCl2=mass/molar mass=1.00 g/129.839g mol^-1=0.008 moles
So 0.008 moles of CoCl2 (used up) has 0.008 moles of Co(II).
3)Tetraamminecopper(II)sulfate [Cu(NH3)4] SO4 x H2O
4)yes it is [PtCl2(H20)2]= Diaquadichloroplatinum(ll).
