Question
Two particles with masses 4m and 7m are moving toward each other along the x axis with the same initial speed vi. The particle with mass 4m is traveling to the left, and particle 7m is traveling to the right. They undergo a head-on elastic collision and each rebounds along the same line as it approached. Find the final speeds of the particles. Particle 4m Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations, x, vi Particle 7m Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations, x, viExplanation / Answer
7m * vi – 4m * vi = 3m * vi
That is the total momentum
3m * vi = 7m V1 + 4m V2
0.5 * 7m * vi^2 + 0.5 * 4m * vi^2 = 5.5m * vi
That is the total KE
5.5m * vi = 0.5* 7m V1^2 + 0.5 * 4m * V2^2
Get rid of the "m's" and "1/2's"
3m * vi = 7m V1 + 4m V2
5.5m * vi = 3.5m V1^2 + 2m * V2^2
by solving both equations calculate V1 and V2
