Question

A diver takes five objects under water: - A 5.00 cm by 9.00 cm by 18.5 cm brick, weighing 23.5 N (above water) - A balloon filled with 1.00 kg of grape jelly, which has a radius of 5.17 cm - A bullfrog, which has an average density of 787 kilograms per cubic meter - An 0.276 kg pipe with an inner radius 2.00 cm, an outer radius of 2.22 cm, and a length of 35.0 cm - An identical pipe, but with the ends of the pipe closed so that the pipe is filled with air. When the diver lets go of each object, does it sink or rise?

Explanation / Answer

density of the brick is d1 = mass/volume = (23.5/9.81)/(5*9*18.5*10^-6) = 2.87*1000 = 2870 which is greater than the density of water (1000 kg/m^3)

hence this brick sinks

-----------------------------------------------------

density of ballon is d2 = mass/volume = 1/((4/3)*pi*r^3) = 1/((4/3)*3.142*0.0517*0.0517) = 89.3 kg/m^3 <denisty of water
hence it floats

------------------------------------------------------

density of bull frog

d3 = 787 kg/m^3 < water density

So it floats

--------------------------
volume is pi*(r2^2-r1^2)*l = 3.142*(0.0222^2-0.02^2)*0.35 = 1.02*10^-4 m^3

mass m = 0.276

density is d4 = mass/volume = 0.276 /(1.02*10^-4) = 2705.88 kg/m^2 > density of water

hence it sinks

----------------------------------------------------
if it is filled with air,then it flaots
