Question

What focal length would be necessary if the lens were to have a maximum angular magnification of 3.47?

I know m(max)=1+25/f but when I get 7.49 it is apparently wrong. I also tried 8.2. Here is the whole statement if it helps:

PRACTICE IT

Use the worked example above to help you solve this problem.

(a) What is the maximum angular magnification of a lens with a focal length of 12.4 cm? 3.01 -correct

(b) What is the angular magnification of this lens when the eye is relaxed? Assume an eye-lens distance of zero. 2.01 -correct

Use the values from PRACTICE IT to help you work this exercise. What focal length would be necessary if the lens were to have a maximum angular magnification of 3.47?
f = ??????????

Explanation / Answer

given angular magnification, M = 3.47

f = ?

we know, M = 1 + 25/f

25/f = M - 1

f = 25/(M-1)

= 25/(3.47 - 1)

= 10.12 cm <<<<<<<<<<<----------Answer
