Cell Growth Problems: Use the following formulas to solve the problems below
2.) An exponentially growing culture has an optical density at 600 nm of 0.2 after 60 minutes and 0.8 after 320 minutes. What is the doubling time?
N-No x 2 g = 1/k 1. You conduct a growth curve experiment to determine the growth rate of a newly isolated bacterium. In this experiment, you use spectrophotometry to monitor the increase in bacterial cell growth. The data is shown in the table below OD600 0.05 0.08 0.13 0.20 0.33 Time (min 60 120 180 240 Use the information in the table to answer the following questions. (a) What is the growth rate of this bacterium? (b)What is the doubling time for this bacterium in minutes?Explanation / Answer
1. Generation Time g = (Time in minutes to obtain the absorbance 0.16) – (Time in minutes to obtain the absorbance 0.08)
= 144 - 60
= 84 min
Growth rate = 1/g
= 1/ 84
= 0.011 / min
2. (Time in minutes to obtain the absorbance 0.8) – (Time in minutes to obtain the absorbance 0.2) / 2
= 320 - 60 / 2
= 130 min
