Question

In a Broadway performance, an 80.5-kg actor swings from a R = 3.80-m-long cable that is horizontal when he starts. At the bottom of his arc, he picks up his 55.0-kg costar in an inelastic collision. What maximum height do they reach after their upward swing?
m

In a Broadway performance, an 80.5-kg actor swings from a R = 3.80-m-long cable that is horizontal when he starts. At the bottom of his arc, he picks up his 55.0-kg costar in an inelastic collision. What maximum height do they reach after their upward swing?
m

Explanation / Answer

V at the bottom = sqrt (2gR) = sqrt(2*9.8*3.8) = 8.63 m/s

now there is in elastic collision now

=> m1v1 = m1+m2)*V

=> 80.5*8.63 = (80.5+55)*V

=> V = 5.12 m/s

max height = V^2/2g = 5.12^2/2*9.8

=> Hmax = 1.33 m
