Question

Help with question # 1 please show you're work Will rate Asap
(F1=f2=4cm) Question 1- 20 points An object of height 4cm is placed 5cm from a thin convex lens (fl = f2 = 4cm). a) How far from the convex lens do I need to place a concave lens (f1 f2 =-12cm) such that the final image is 11 cm from the first convex lens? b) What is the height of the final image? c) What is the magnification? d) Is the final image real or virtual? e) Is the final image upright or inverted? f) Draw to scale the ray diagram for this object/ lens system (use a separate sheet of paper, use a ruler or straight edge) Question 2-10 points Unpolarized light of intensity lo passes through a linear polarizing filter. a) What angle, relative to the first fiter, must a second filter be such that the final int is .1*l0?

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

f1 = f2 = 4 cm

for the concave lens , fc = -12 cm

after the convex lens , let the image is located at di1

Using lens formula

1/f1 = 1/do + 1/di1

1/4 = 1/5 + 1/di1

di1 = 20 cm

for the concave lens ,

do2 = d - 20 = d - 20

Using lens formula

1/f = 1/di2 + 1/do2

-1/12 = 1/(d - 20) + 1/(d - 11)

d = 16.3 cm

the distance between the lens must be 16.3 cm

b)

for the final height of image

final height of image = -4 * (20/5) * (16.3 - 20)/(16.3 - 11)

final height of image = 11.17 cm

the final height of image is 11.17 cm

c) magnification = final height of image/object distance

magnification = 11.17/4

magnification = 2.793

d)

as the magnification is positive , the image is virtual
