Question

Very much appreciated. I need help on these homework problems and I've visited my schools tutors but they're not confident in any of the help they give me and on some they just tried to "steer" me in the right direction and it wasn't helpful. I need this to study from to really understand this material. Very much appreciated. Assume the diameter of his pupil is 4 mm and the wavelength of the light is 550 nm, what is the shuttle's altitude above the earth?

Explanation / Answer

rayleigh criteria for resolving power

minimum angular seperation = 1.22 L/D

where L = is wavelength = 550 x 10-9 m

D is dia pupil = 4 x 10-3 m

minimum angular seperation required = 1.22 x 550 x 10-9 /(4 x 10-3)

=0.000168 radian

suppose the H is height than angular seperation is = tan-1(125/H)

to resolve clearly it should be equal to 0.000168 = tan-1(125/H)

note TanA=A for small A

H= 745156.5 m or 745 km
