Question

An object with a height of -0.070 m points below the principal axis (it is inverted) and is 0.170 m in front of a diverging lens. The focal length of the lens is -0.40 m. (Include the sign of the value in your answers.) What is the magnification? .29 Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. What is the image height? -1.74 Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Rework your solution from the beginning and check each step carefully, m What is the image distance?

Explanation / Answer

here f = - 0.40 m u = -0.170 m h1 = -0.070 m

as we know that

1 / f = 1 / v + 1 / u

1 / v = 1 / (-0.40) - 1 / (-0.170)

= -2.5 + 5.882

= 3.382

v = 0.295 m

if the h2 is the image height so

h2 / h1 = - v / u

h2 / (-0.070) = - 0.295 / (-0.170)

h2 = - 0.121 m Ans

so the magnification

m = h2 / h1

= (-0.121) / (-0.070)

= 1.73 Ans
