Help with relative dating questions Station 2: Plutons in Chile inse Recall these photos from the Igneous Rock Lab? The larger diagram shows a mountain-sized view of the contact, whereas the inset shows a close-up view of the contact. a) Which of the rocks, the light rock or the dark rock is younger? What evidence is seen on the close-up (the inset) to support your answer? b) Where within or on the Earth did these plutonic rocks crystallize? c) W hat must have happened after crystallization to expose these rocks at the Earth's surface? Station 3: Inclusion a, which isolder, thedark rock or the light rock? A nalusion b. How can you tell?Explanation / Answer
ANSWER QUESTION (A)
WHICH ROCKS ARE OLDER THE LIGHT ROCKS OR DARK ROCKS
The relative age of rocks are generally found by super position method, faunal succession method and cross cutting method.
in the above diagram one can see that the lighter rocks are beneath the darker rocks hence by imposing the principle of superposition method it can be found that LIGHTER ROCKS ARE OLDER THAN THE DARKER ROCKS.THS PRINCIPLE SAYS THAT YOUNGER ROCKS ARE ABOVE THE OLDER ROCKS IN THE STATE OF THEIR FORMATION.
ANSWER (b)
Plutonic rocks are type of igneous rocks which are formed beneath the surface of earth when Mmagma cools and solidifies beneath the earth.
the main difference between plutonic rocks and volcanic rocks is there formation .the volcanic rocks are formed when hot molten lava solidifies on earth surface and plutonic rocks solidifies beneath earth surface.
ANSWER (C)
When these plutonic rocks are expsed to earth,s surface (due to eruption) they are very hard and it erodes very slowly. they becomes massive granite forms for example EL CAPTAIN ..Plutonic rocks formed beneath surface of earth are generally in the form of stocks, sill or dikes and if it is emptied after an eruption they generally collapse or results in the formation of caladera.
