Question

A ballistic pendulum system fires a bullet into a pendulum bob suspended by a rod of negligible mass. Bullet mass m1 =0.05kg with an initial speed v1i=1.20 m/s. Pendulum bob mass alone and initial velocity: (m2=0.65 kg, v2i=0m/s). After the collision, the bullet and the bob stick together and they swing through an arc, eventually gaining a vertical height h.

A. Is this Elastic or inelastic collision?

b) Find the momentum of m1 and m2 before collision

1. P1=

2. P2=

3. Ptotal=

C) find velocity of combined mass after the collision using conservation momentum

D) find the total kinetic energy of the system afte the collision

E) Use conservation of mechanical energy holds(assume no friction or aire resist) find the macimum heigh of the system after the collision

Explanation / Answer

step;1

given that

mass of the bullet m1=0.05 kg

velocity of bullet v1i=1.2 m/s

mass of the bob m2=0.65 kg

velocity of bob=V2i=0 m/s

now we find the finial velocity

according law of conservation of momentum

m1v1+m2v2=[m1+m2]v

0.05*1.2+0.65*0=[0.05+0.65]v

velocity of bullet and bob after collision V=0.086 m/s

the collision is perfect inelastic collision

(b) ans

Pi=0.05*1.2=0.06 kg.m/s

P2=0

Ptotal=(0.05*0.65)0.086=0.0602 kg.m/s

(c) ans

the finial velocity after collision V=0.086 m/s

(d) ans

the total kinetic energy after collision =1/2[0.05+0.65]*0.086^2=2.6*10^-3 J

(e) ans

the height H=0.086^2/2*9.8=3.8*10^-4 m
