Question

B. Before setting up the circuit shown at the right: 1. Predict the ranking of the currents through the battery and each bulb (i i, i, and is). Explain. 2. Predict the voltmeter measurements predictions T across each of the elements in the circuit Avail AVaiR shown. Explain. 3. Set up the circuit and check your measurements. predictions. If your observations and measurements are not consistent with 4.5 is o Z25 o your predictions, explain the inconsistencies CK Sim Tutorial, version 10 (10-11-2007)

Explanation / Answer

(1) Assuming that the resistance of all bulbs are same , say R
Now , since the bulb 1 is in parallel with bulb 2 and 3 therfore the
voltage in the bulb 1 is V = 9
But in the case of bulb 2 and 3 V = 4.5 V
Now current , net resistane will be
= 1/R + 1/2R = 3/2R
Rnet = (2/3)R
therefore the current in the battery = 9/(2R/3) = 13.5R
Now this current will divide in two branches whose voltage difference is equal therfore
I1R = i2(2R)
I1 = 2i2
I1 + I2 = 13.5 R
3I2 = 13.5 R
I2 = I3 = 4.5 R
I1 = 9 R
