Question

An electric dipole is formed from a -2.50 E-9 Coulomb charge at the origin of a coordinate system and a +2.50 E-9 Coulomb charge located at 7.50 E-6 m on the positive y-axis of that coordinate system.

The dipole is immersed in an electric field described by E = (2.50 i - 1.00 j) N/C in the same coordinate system.

a) Find the dipole moment (magnitude and acceleration)

b) find the torque (in vertical/horizontal component form) on the dipole due to the electric field

c) Find the change in potential energy of the system as the dipole lines up with the field.

Explanation / Answer

a)

for the charge ,

dipole moment , p = 2.5 *10^-9 * 7.5 *10^-6 j

p = 1.875 *10^-14 j C.m

b) Now , for the torque

Torque acting = p X E

Torque acting = 1.875 *10^-14 j X (2.5 i - 1 j )

Torque acting = - 4.69 *10^-14 k N.m

c)

for the change in potential energy of system

change in potential energy of system = -(1.875 *10^-14 * sqrt(2.5^2 + 1^2)) + 1.875 *10^-14 * (- 1)

change in potential energy of system = -6.92 *10^-14 J
