Question

Calculate: (a) Acceleration due to gravity (in m/s2) on Earth and on Mars. (b) Weight of Sojourner (in N) on Earth and on Mars.
The Sojourner, has a mass of 10.5 kg. Mass of Earth = 5.97×1024 kg, Mass of Mars = 6.39×1023 kg
Radius of Earth = 6378 km, Radius of Mars = 3397 km Gravitational constant, G = 6.674×1011 m3/(kg-s2)

Explanation / Answer

a)

acceleration due to gravity, g = GM/R^2

So, on Earth, g = 6.674*10^-11*(5.97*10^24)/(6378*10^3)^2

= 9.785 m/s2

on Mars, g = 6.674*10^-11*(6.39*10^23)/(3397*10^3)^2

= 3.696 m/s2

b)

Weight of Sojourner on Earth: m = 10.5*9.785 = 102.7 kg

Weight of Sojourner on Mars: m' = 10.5*3.696 = 38.81 kg
