Question

A circuit consists of the following elements in series, and the direction around the circuit in which I will describe the elements is from the positive terminal of the battery back around to the negative terminal: a battery, a switch, a resistor (resistor 1), a capacitor (parallel plate), and a second resistor (resistor 2). The switch is closed, and remains closed. The resitance of resistor 1 (R1) is 10 ohms, the resistance of resistor 2 (R2) is 10 ohms, the capacitance of the capacitor is (1.0*10^-6) J/C and the emf (potential difference across the battery) is 3.0 volts. After a long time, what is the potential difference across the second resistor (R2)? After a long time what is the potential difference across the capacitor?

Explanation / Answer

After long time capacitor will be fully charged and potential difference across it will be equal to applied EMF i.e. 3 volts . As it will be fully charge circuit will behave as an open circuit and there will be no current flowing through circuit so potential across R2 will be zero .
