Weekly 08: Work, Kinetic Energy, and Potential Energy Item 17 17 of 24 A 12-cm-long spring is attached to the ceiling When a 2.5 kg mass is hung from it, the spring stretches to a length of 17 cm Part A What is the spring constant k? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. You may want to review (Pages 219 221) k= Value Units Submit Request Answer Part B How long is the spring when a 3.0 kg mass is suspended from it? Explanation / Answer

a) at equillibrium

spring force = weight of the mass hang

=> kx = mg

where spring stretches from 12cm to 17 cm => x = 5 cm

=> k = 2.5*9.8/0.05 = 490 N/m spring constant

b) when 3 kg mass is suspended

=> kx = mg

=> x = 3.0*9.8/490 = 0.06 m = 6 cm = y'
