Question
Two forces, F1 and F2 , act at a point, as shown in the picture. (Figure 1) F1 has a magnitude of 8.80 N and is directed at an angle of = 57.0 above the negative x axis in the second quadrant. F2 has a magnitude of 7.00 N and is directed at an angle of = 53.8 below the negative x axis in the third quadrant.
What is the x component Fx of the resultant force?
What is the y component Fy of the resultant force?
What is the magnitude F of the resultant force?
What is the angle that the resultant force forms with the negative x axis? In this problem, assume that positive angles are measured clockwise from the negative x axis
Explanation / Answer
F1x = -8.80cos57.0 = -4.8 N
F1y = 8.80sin57.0= 7.38 N
F2x = -7.00cos53.8 = -4.13 N
F2y = 7.00sin53.8 = -5.65 N
Fx= F1x + F2x = -4.8-4.13 = -8.93 N
Fy = F1y + F2y = 7.38 – 5.65 = 1.73 N
F= sqrt(8.93^2 + 1.73^2) = 9.01 N
= tan^-1 (-1.73/8.93) = -11.0 deg above -x axis
