Question

Two particles are fixed to an x axis: particle 1 of charge -6.26 × 10-7 C is at the origin and particle 2 of charge +6.26 × 10-7 C is at x2 = 16.8 cm. Midway between the particles, what is the magnitude of the net electric field?

Chapter 22, Problem oo4 Two particles are fixed to an x axis: particle 1 of charge -6.26 x 10 C is at the origin and particle 2 of charge +6.26 x 10 C is at x2 6.8 cm. Midway between the particles, what is the magnitude of the net electric field? Number Units the tolerance is +/-9%

Explanation / Answer

mid way between the charges means 8.4 cm from the origin

the electric field due to a point charge is E = k*Q/d^2

the direction of field is away from positive charge and field direction is towards the charge from the nehative charge

then field due to Q1 = -6.26*10^-7 at mid way between the charges is E1 = k*Q1/d^2 = (9*10^9*6.26*10^-7)/(0.084^2) = 7.98*10^5 N/C towards the origin

field due to Q2 = +6.26*10^-7 at the midway between the charges is E2 = k*Q2/d^2 = (9*10^9*6.26*10^-7)/(0.084^2)= 7.98*10^5 N towards origin

Hence the net field at the mid way between the charges is Enet = E1+E2 = (7.98*10^5)+(7.98*10^5) = 15.96*10^5 N/C towards origin
