Question
Calculate the average % survival of each genotype?
Calculate the average number offspring per surviving adult?
Scenario 4 A baculum is a bone found in the penis of many placental mammals. Three different baculum morphologies have been observed in the Mexican fuzzy mouse. Baculum shape is controlled by three genotypes: Genotype Phenotype GG Shovel-shaped Gig Spear-shaped gg Triton-shaped A new colony of 390 Mexican fuzzy mice settles in the mountains of Oaxaca. 259 ofthe mice are GG, 106 are Gg, and 25 are gg. Male mice with shovel-shaped baculums can easily remove the sperm deposited in a potential mate by a rival male. Triton-shaped baculums can remove some, but not all sperm, and spear-shaped baculums cannot effectively remove any sperm. GG mice bear an average of 8 offspring each, Gg mice bare 4 offspring, and gg mice bear an average of 6 offspring each.Explanation / Answer
a) The average % survival of each genotype is –
[(259/390) +(25/390)]X 100 = [0.66+ 0.06] X 100 = 72%
As the overall survival rate is the % of individuals born that survive to produce offspring. So, here GG ang gg are capable to produce more offspring than Gg, so GG and gg will survive.
b) GG surviving adult produces an average of 8 offspring each. gg surviving adult produces an average of 6 offspring each.
