Question

Two converging lenses are separated by 25.00 cm. The focal lengthof each lens is 15.00 cm. An object is placed 37.00 cm to the leftof the lens that is on the left. Determine the final image distancerelative to the lens on the right.

Explanation / Answer

with respect to the first lens u=37cm f=15cm using the eq 1/v+1/u=1/f we have 1/v=1/15-1/37=>v=25.22cm now this image will be the objective for the next lens so the object distance for the second lens=25-25.22=-0.22cm ie the image will be on the right of the second lens at a distanceof 0.22cm again 1/v=1/15-1/0.22=>v=-0.2232cm so the final image distance relative to the lens on theright.=-0.2232cm
