During the first month of season she began experiencing bad shin pain that would not go away. At the doctors it was revealed the she had lost almost 10 pounds and had not begun menarche. In addition, she had a stress fracture. She was placed in a walking boot and her parents were given the names of several health professionals to contact for assistance.

1)Aside from the stress fracture, what condition might Stacey be experiencing?

2)How does the condition contribute to the development of a stress fracture?

3)What follow up care should be advised to her parents?

Explanation / Answer

1) Apart from stress fracture, Stacey suffers from upper limb and rib stress fractures. Osteoporosis is the major risk factor in this case.

2) A stress fracture is a tiny crack observed in bone. Putting repetitive strain on bones results in the permanent breakage of bones. Resting gives bones a chance to rebuild.

When the amount of stress increases I.e running a farther distance or starting a new sport, body cannot support. Hence bones cannot handle and develop stress resulting in the development of tiny cracks called as "micro fractures" this condition contribute to the development of a stress fracture.

3) proper care must be taken for the patients suffering from stress fractures:

a. Taking foods with plenty of calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients help keep bones strong.

b. Start any activity or an exercise slowly and increase its intensity gradually.

c. Concentration on the techniques during training.

d. If we find any pain or swelling in any region during the training, just stop doing the activity and consult a doctor.
