Question
Two small spheres, each of mass 2.00 g, are suspended from the ceiling by strings each 10.0 cm long. A uniform electric field E is applied in the +x direction. THe charges on the spheres are -5.00 x 10 ^ -8 C and +5.00 x 10 ^ -8 C. If the spheres are in equilibrium each at an angle of 10.0 degrees to the vertical, what is the magnitude of the electric field? If the spheres are in equilibrium each at an angle of 10.0 degrees to the vertical, what is the magnitude of the electric field?Explanation / Answer
Okay, so we know: F = QE or E = F/Q, Fnet = 0 = Fx component of gravity + Fdue to other sphere + Felectric field. Fx component of gravity can be found by: 0.1Sin(10 degrees) X 0.002 X 9.81 Fdue to other sphere can be found by: (other sphere's charge) X ((sphere's charge)/(4pi(epsilon not)((2(.1sin10))^2))) Felectric field can be found by simple algebra. From there, divide the force by 5.00 x 10 ^ -8 C to get the electric field. Hope this helps... sorry if it's sloppy; I couldn't get the custom equation window to work right.Related Questions
