Question

A 1080 kg car is pulling a 310 kg trailer. Together, the car and trailer have an acceleration of 2.05 m/s2 in the forward direction. Neglecting frictional forces on the trailer, determine the following. (Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer. Take the forward direction to be positive.)

(a) the net force on the car

(b) the net force on the trailer

(c) the force exerted by the trailer on the car

(d) the resultant force exerted by the car on the road
magnitude
direction (below the horizontal from the forward direction)

Explanation / Answer

Mass of car, m1 = 1080 kg

Mass of trailer, m2 = 310 kg

Acceleration of the system, a = 2.05  m/s^2

(a) The net force on the car, F = ma = (m1 + m2)a = 2849.5 N

(b) The net force on the trailer, F2 = m2a = 635.5 N

(c) The force exerted by trailer on car = - F2 = - 635.5 N

(d)  The force in forward direction,  F = 2849.5 kg

The force in downward direction, F' = (m1+m2)g = 13622 N

These two are perpendicular, So the net F = (F^2 + F'^2)^(1/2)

                                                               = 13916.8 N

The direction of force, = Tan^-1(F/F') = 11.81 degrees below the horizontal
